After rehearsal Ant had said that he was heading Bea’s way, so they walked together across the rec.

‘What were you going to say?’ asked Bea.

‘I could only think of “Every Day I Love you Less and Less” on the spur of the moment.’

‘Harsh.’

‘I’ll come up with something better if I have some time to think about it.’

‘Try and think of something nice.’

‘Yeah, right. Think we need something a bit more modern. That old stuff was a bit drippy, wasn’t it?’

‘I quite liked it.’

‘Yeah, well, you’re soft, you are. Are you going to ask your mum if she wants to join the choir?’

Bea was genuinely taken aback. ‘Oh, I hadn’t thought about it. Actually, she’d probably really like it. I will. You coming back for a bit of tea?’

‘Nah, Saggy’s mum is out again. Him and me are going out for a pie and a pint at the Jubilee. Then after that, I’m going to Bob’s. I took my stuff over there yesterday. He pretty much begged me to stay in his spare room.’

‘Yeah?’

‘I wasn’t going to ask, but it came from him. Think he wants the company. We spent last night having a beer and listening to a small part of his county and western music collection. Bloody awful, it was, but worth it for a room of my own.’

‘That’s better then. Did you get a good night’s sleep?’

‘Sort of. It was a bit odd being so comfy after Saggy’s garden lounger. Funny what you get used to.’

‘Is Saggy’s drone fixable?’

‘Yeah, he reckons. The footage didn’t show anything, by the way. I don’t think anyone’s buried anything in Dave’s garden recently.’

‘That doesn’t surprise me,’ said Bea. ‘I’ve had a thought about that. Dave’s a surveyor, isn’t he? So he’s got access to all sorts of building sites. I reckon that’s where he’d bury a body, or three of them. Could even be at Costsave.’

‘Unless he didn’t do anything.’

‘Tiffany’s toy, Ant.’ It was still in the pocket of her black denim jacket. She brought it out now and held it in the palm of her hand. ‘She literally never goes – went – anywhere without it. This is all the evidence I need.’

Ant snorted. ‘Might not be enough to have him arrested.’

‘What else can we do, though? Maybe we need to get inside the house, have a look round.’

‘Breaking and entering?’ He looked at her sharply. ‘I don’t do that anymore.’

‘I don’t necessarily mean that.’

‘How else? Knock on his door and ask to have a look round? Get real, Bea.’

Ant peeled off to the pub. Bea put the toy duck back in her pocket, but she kept her fingers on it and as she walked round the shops to her street her worries about Julie wouldn’t go away. If there wasn’t evidence in the garden and she couldn’t dig up all the building sites in Kingsleigh, perhaps she did need to get into Dave’s house. It wouldn’t be as easy as knocking on the door, but maybe there was another way.
